How AI-powered consumer interactions could give beauty brands a new window into what consumers want — and help inform what they build next.
October 20, 2026
By: Irina Mazur
Beauty companies have never had more information about their consumers. Sales tell us what people bought. A search reveals what they looked for. Reviews show what they thought afterwards. Market research identifies broader shifts in attitudes and behavior.
But there is still something these signals don’t always tell us: what does the consumer actually want?
A shopper may ultimately buy a moisturizer, but the transaction alone doesn’t explain that they wanted something lightweight enough to wear under makeup, were concerned about sensitivity, rejected certain ingredients, compared several formulations, or couldn’t find one product addressing the combination of needs they had.
AI is beginning to give beauty brands a new window into that missing layer.
As consumers increasingly interact with AI-powered advisors, conversational experiences and guided product discovery, they are doing more than clicking, searching, or purchasing.
They are expressing intent.
They describe their concerns. They explain the outcomes they want. They ask about ingredients and formulations. They compare products, communicate preferences, and reveal what they cannot find.
One interaction can help make a recommendation more relevant. But across many interactions, those signals can begin to reveal something much bigger.
Beauty businesses already have enormous amounts of information. The challenge is that much of it still exists across separate systems.
Product information sits in one place. Consumer experiences sit somewhere else. Ecommerce analytics, market research, merchandising, and product development each provide another part of the picture.
Yet beauty is inherently interconnected.
A product is not simply a SKU. It is a formulation, ingredients, benefits, claims, a routine step, a format, and a package — all working together to communicate a proposition to the consumer.
Understanding why consumers choose a product — or why they cannot find what they need — increasingly requires connecting those dimensions with what consumers themselves are expressing.
The next opportunity is therefore not more data. It is making the intelligence already being created more connected and useful.
This starts with understanding the product itself differently.
Traditional catalogs are designed to organize products. But increasingly intelligent commerce requires understanding the relationships between products, ingredients, attributes, benefits, concerns, routines, and educational content.
This is where a deeper layer of beauty intelligence becomes important.
This deeper knowledge can make consumer guidance more relevant, but its value extends beyond the recommendation. When product intelligence is connected with what consumers are actually asking for, brands gain another perspective on how their portfolio fits real consumer needs.
Imagine consumers repeatedly looking for the same combination of benefits, but no existing product fully addresses them.
Or shoppers consistently comparing two products a brand never considered competitors. Perhaps consumers repeatedly ask about a benefit already present in a formulation, but poorly communicated through the product’s positioning or packaging.
Individually, these are consumer interactions. Collectively, they can become signals of unmet demand.
Patterns across interactions can help surface emerging needs, demand signals, product-audience fit, and potential market gaps.
For product and packaging teams, that creates new questions: What are consumers trying to solve that our portfolio doesn’t? What information are they struggling to understand? Which benefits are becoming more important? Where could there be white space for a new formulation, format, claim, or proposition?
Packaging becomes part of that feedback loop. It communicates what a product does, how it should be used and why it matters, while consumer interactions can reveal whether that message is actually being understood. Repeated questions or points of confusion may indicate not only an education opportunity, but an opportunity to reconsider how benefits, claims, formats or usage are communicated through the pack itself.
